The Fourth of July

        Today  Americans celebrate the Fourth of July. On this same day 242 years ago, 1776, delegates from the 13 colonies declared independence from the British Empire after a long, hard fought war. The Fourth of July was a historic day for Americans. It was also an emotional day for me, imprinted in my heart forever: 42 years ago, it was the day I first set foot on American soil: a refugee camp, Fort Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania.

        Only three months before this date 4th of July 1975, I was still in Saigon living in fear that I would lose my freedom if Communists North Vietnam to win the war.

        Lucky for me, even though I was an unknown, insignificant human being, during the last few days of Saigon in "Operation Frequent Wind", the US government and the US military evacuated my family and me, along with thousands of other Vietnamese refugees, out of Vietnam.

        Today, the Fourth of July, and also just like every other day in my life, I am forever grateful to American people, to America, for sacrificing her wealth, her children, to bring me to this country.

        Hôm nay người Mỹ ăn mừng ngày 4 Tháng 7. Đúng vào ngày này 242 năm trước, đại biểu của 13 thuộc địa tuyên bố độc lập từ Anh quốc, sau một chiến tranh lâu dài đầy xương máu. Ngày 4 Tháng 7 là ngày lịch sử của người Mỹ. Nó cũng là ngày mang cho tôi nhiều kỷ niệm in măi trong ḷng: 42 năm trước, đó cũng là ngày đầu tiên tôi bước chân lên đất Mỹ ở trại tỵ nạn Fort Indiantown Gap, tiểu bang Pennsylvania.

        Chỉ ba tháng trước đó, tôi sống ở SàiG̣n trong lo âu sợ hăi sẽ mất tự do nếu quân đội Cộng Sản Bắc Việt chiến thắng miền Nam.

        May mắn cho tôi, dù rằng tôi là một kẻ vô danh tiểu tốt, trong những ngày cuối cùng của Sài G̣n trong Chiến dịch "Gió Thổi Không Ngừng", chính phủ và quân đội Hoa Kỳ di tản gia đ́nh tôi cùng cả chục ngàn người Việt tỵ nạn khác ra khỏi Việt Nam.

        Hôm nay, ngày 4 Tháng 7, cũng như  mỗi ngày trong đời, tôi cảm ơn dân chúng và quốc gia Hoa Kỳ đă hy sinh tiền bạc và sinh mạng của con dân Mỹ để mang tôi đến đất nước này.
